Earthquakes and the internet of things

I had a call with somebody in San Francisco the other day.  On that occasion, I remembered that San Francisco (and Silicon Valley) is located in one of the most geologically active regions in the world.  My first thought was, “why would one build one of the largest technology centers in the world in one of the most geologically active regions in the world?”.  My second thought was, “are there any recent technological developments that might improve monitoring of geological events?”.
